when i am gone

the world at home still turns
the stove fire still burns
the children still grow and need
and their wounds still bleed

and they have you

it would be so easily to shirk
responsibilities with kids and school and work
to let them grow wild and free
careless like a windblown tapestry

but they do have you

the moments i miss
each hurt to kiss
each lesson to teach
each shelf to reach

reside in you

when i am gone
